How to Be Proactive with Your Insurance Claim

Here at VGM Insurance, we stay proactive and help our clients mitigate risk by offering an annual review of your insurance. This comprehensive analysis includes looking at any changes in your business, specific to your industry, and looking at ways we can enhance your coverage.

Likewise, you should also be proactive when it comes to your insurance needs. Before you ever find yourself in a situation where you need to file a claim, do the following things:

  1. Make a list of all your major physical assets – These are the items within your business that you would need to replace if you were to face a total loss. These include electronics, furniture, products and office equipment. Update the list annually. Keep any receipts of major purchases, or in absence of receipts, take a picture of your most valuable items to prove ownership.
  2. Have a backup of important information – And that includes the list you made from #1! Make sure client documents, business records, etc., are backed up someplace physically off-site. You can contract with an IT service to back your information up on the cloud or on their servers. In a pinch, you can also back everything up on a thumb drive, but that is also risky.
  3. Keep a paper trail – Document everything, even if you don’t think you’ll need it later. If you face a liability lawsuit, you will need all the paperwork possible to tell your side of the story.
  4. Have your customers sign waivers – Is your customer installing the equipment themselves, instead of opting to have you do it? Make sure they sign a waiver to refuse service. If they install equipment they purchased from you and they do a poor job, they could possibly sue later on.

These are just a few of the things that you can do proactively to make sure any future insurance claims go smoothly. We can make sure you’re covered in case the unthinkable does happen. In the event of a claim, remember that you can now fill out the quick “Report a Claim” form on our website to get the claims process started immediately. Alternatively, you can give our claims team a call at 844-898-2321 or fax us at 866-431-9547.
